instagram will make ai accounts label themselves

mosseri says instagram is starting to require ai accounts to say so. he also admits that content probably ranks worse.

what he said

instagram head adam mosseri went on the colin and samir podcast, mainly to talk about long videos.

when ai content came up, he said instagram is "now starting to require" those accounts to label themselves, "because we think it's important that people know if what they're looking at is real or not real."

per the verge, instagram already launched a label for these accounts earlier this year and started cracking down on ai profiles in august.

the ranking part

mosseri claimed instagram doesn't rank these creators differently.

but asked whether ai content ranks as well as everything else, he said: "probably not."

his explanation: a new type of content that shows up fast is harder for the systems to understand, and the quality scores aren't where they need to be yet.

why it matters for a creator business

if you run ai pages, two things are now on record from the top:

  • labelling is becoming required, not optional
  • that content may already rank worse, label or not

the short version

  • labels for generated accounts are becoming required
  • that content probably ranks worse already
