comfy ran an open rebuild of higgsfield's apps. higgsfield sent a cease and desist

comfy challenged builders to rebuild higgsfield-style apps as free open workflows. higgsfield objected to its name being used. the challenge stayed up.

what happened

comfy, the company behind comfyui, ran a challenge called open source higgsfield. the pitch: higgsfield said it would open source its platform, so let's help.

builders had two weeks to rebuild higgsfield's most popular apps as open workflows anyone can run.

the letter

per the reel stack, higgsfield's lawyers sent comfy a cease and desist dated 28 october.

the letter objected to comfy using the higgsfield trademark and the higgsfield ceo's likeness in the campaign. it said higgsfield doesn't object to open source or to naming higgsfield in comparisons.

comfy's ceo posted the letter and said: "the challenge stays up."

where it stands

comfy extended the deadline to 3 november. the challenge page lists winners on 10 november, featured on the comfy hub.

entries must be open source, lawful and sfw.

why it matters for a creator business

a lot of teams pay monthly for closed video apps that wrap open models.

if the community can rebuild those apps in two weeks and give them away, the subscription you're paying for gets harder to justify.

the short version

  • comfy challenged builders to rebuild higgsfield-style apps in the open
  • higgsfield objected to its name and its ceo's likeness being used, not to open source
  • the challenge stayed up, winners are due 10 november
  • if you pay for closed video apps, look at the free entries before renewing
